Camera Update! Mailbox Issue and wait, GATES?!

Joe posted this comment yesterday,

The F building mailbox panel appears to either have been not secured the postman or broken into. I reported the incident to the postal inspection service but due to the holiday I probably won't hear anything until later this week. The camera install got delayed toward the end of last week due to the rain, install will resume this week. I also have an appointment with a gate contractor this week.

I was wondering why I hadn't seen any cameras up yet but it makes sense, electricity and water is no bueno! I'm a firm believer in gates, and would love to see that issue pushed.

Just curious -

1) will we (homeowners/residents) be notified as to where the cameras will be placed? (not sure why we would NEED to...but just wondering)

2) regarding the gates, is the idea of making part of williams and wellington the entrance and the cabrillo park dr/williams the exits still in mind...?

I am all for the gates as well, but I will admit that I'm not too excited about making designated entrances and exits...of course others will disagree, and i welcome and respect that...just...yeah.

Homeowners will be notified about the cameras but right now some of the issues we are having are being caused by residents, you can e-mail me for more details (jegiese@ocsd.org). Here is what will happen if the gates are approved.

The North Williams Driveway(near Albertson's) could serve as an entrance and an exit.

The South Williams Driveway(corner of Williams and Wellington) would serve as an exit only.

The Wellington Drieway could serve as an entrance and an exit.

The Cabrillo Park Driveway would serve as an exit only.

The city of Santa Ana requires that we allow 60ft( or two car lenghts clearance) from the street at every ENTRANCE. This is to avoid any traffic congestion when multiple cars Its not a matter of us choosing which to make exits or entrances, its a matter of city requirements, construction and cost. In order to make the the Cabrillo and South Williams Driveways entrances and exits, we would have to reconstruct carports and driveways themselves. So we've decided this would be the most logical option to reduce cost and time.

I apologize to any of the new safety committee members, I had to work this weekend and wasn't able to give anyone a call back.

Gates +1. I'm definetly in favor of installing gates. The question then becomes how do we control the opening and closing of the gates? Keypad? Card swipe?

If the gates open automatically when one approaches, that defeats the purpose altogether.

... On another subject, I still disagree with the new parking policy...

I would be shooting for card swipe or biometric access, as I'm going to be proposing the same for locks on the common areas(i.e. laundry rooms, clubhouse, pool area.) It would be controlled access of some kind. The thing I don't like about clickers is that tend to get them stolen and once a crook has access we're toast. The good thing about the cards is that they can be re-programmed. Biometrics would be ideal, its pretty hard and bloody to steal thumbs but it would come at a greater cost.

I am in favor of the gates...

it will increase safety and also the property value

can someone post up a map of where the cameras will be installed? thanks!

Just because gates and cameras go up doesn't mean you should let your guard down.

Gates and cameras give way to a false sense of security.

Thats is so true, these can only be effective if them work to our advantage.

yet another thing to think about is how far the gates will extend. If they only block the driveways, what would stop someone from parking on the steet and walking around the gate?

You would neet to gate the entire community to prevent this. A huge gate along williams and cabrillo park dr would probably cost a pretty penny.

Any plan that Joe would be looking at would include gating the entire community. Otherwise, you are right, gman, it doesn't make sense. I've now had my car broken into 4 times in less than 2 years, causing over 12K in damage (convertible roofs are very expensive to replace). I've done everything I can to discourage break-ins, i.e. nothing is ever left in the car that would attract theft. Unfortunately it doesn't work as there is an environment of vandalism here that needs to be combated first. I strongly believe cameras and gates are a step in the right direction.

I talked to the installers yesterday, their deadline for completion is next Friday.
